Note on Soph. Oed. Col. 755

...ἀλλ᾽ οὐ γὰρ ἔστι τἀμφανῆ κρύπτειν.

Pregnant reference to the Heraclitean φύσις κρύπτεσθαι φιλεῖ and οὔτε λέγει οὔτε κρύπτει ἀλλὰ σημαίνει. The line is a pejorative from Sophocles, put in the mouth of Creon, rejecting the modernism of the Aeschylean Oresteia in which illuminating reason is prized over the chthonic. Here, the soothe-saying sophist is the antithesis of the whole Greek religious-philosophical tradition, in which, certainly, κρύπτειν is both possible and important.
